Based on Roald Dahl’s book about dealing with chilhood tinkers & torments, this is a spectacular and polished production for all of the family.
This show would not be suitable for very young children as you do have to invest in this play.
With a bouncy and wordy score by Minchin, you’ll never be bored although most tunes are more or less instantly forgettable.
There’s no doubting Tim is a hugely talented and witty wordsmith though.
There are 4 Matilda’s on tour. We were lucky to enjoy Nicola Turner during our performance. She was magnificent in her tenderness, voice and tenacity.
Carly Thoms is a delightful Miss Honey, the teacher who mentors Matilda despite her own issues. A compelling actress.
Most impressive though was Craige Els who steals the show.
Reprising this panto-esk role of headmistress Miss Trunchbull from the West End, Els towers above the show in stature and stage presence with his remarkable personality, powerful delivery and devilishly brilliant pathos.
What is most satisfying about MATILDA is the precision. This entire cast work tirelessly to make this beautiful looking show seamless.
Young girls especially love this show which is a huge achievement in 2018. For that alone it deserves 5* praise and a visit.
It may not have Les Mis or Phantom repeat booking appeal, but, I’m definitely glad I got to see it again I’m the road.
