Review Bandstand on Broadway…
New York’s hottest director-choreographer, Andy Blankenbuehler (who shot to fame via Hamilton) brings BANDSTAND to Broadway.
This brand new musical is a wartime story of love, music and passion which brings the effortless warmth and charm of a better time.
The set & staging is humble but the talent is quite special. Laura Osnes & Corey Cott are a delicious pairing both in terms of chemistry and talent.
They both sing like a bird and Corey’s physicality is captivating. Laura’s voice is second to none and a joy to hear.
Bandstand does not use spectacle to wow audiences. However, the live musicians on stage is hugely moving and invigorating.
At times the gags and dialogue feel tired & schticky, however, the dancing/stage management is totally contemporary. The audience laughed regardless throughout this 3h music & dance production.
It’s fair to say this show is attracting an older crowd that desire classic classy Broadway. If that’s your bag, this is a huge hit!
